Second phase of “Mentoring Circles” program ends successfully

3M and Semusa successfully participated in the second phase of our “Mentoring Circle” program. The program’s main goal is to establish a “Mentoring Circle” between the companies and a group of young adults. The mentors acquire the commitment of sharing experiences and knowledge to contribute to the mentee’s personal and professional growth. In a period of 8 weeks, mentors teach the mentees about goal setting strategies, self-esteem, personal image for job interviews and how to prepare a resume. The mentees are students between 16-18 years old and beneficiaries of Movimiento Nueva Generación and Fundación Educativa Juan Pablo II.

The graduation ceremonies were very emotional for both mentors and mentees because of the strong bond developed during the 8 weeks they spent together. During the ceremonies, several mentees expressed their deep appreciation to the mentors for guiding them throughout the sessions. Between laughter and tears, the mentors gave the completion certificate to their mentees. Also, the mentees had the opportunity to give their mentors the certificate.

3M’s mentors challenged their mentees of Movimiento Nueva Generación to a bowling tournament while Semusa’s mentores danced along with their mentees of Fundación Educativa Juan Pablo II.

United Way Panama organizes a «World Café» to discuss results of Survey and Study

In recent days, a «World Café» took place in Panama to discuss the results of the First National Volunteering Survey and the first study in Management of Non-Profits. The survey and study were funded by United Way Panama, Voluntarios de Panamá, Alcance Positivo /USAID and the event was sponsored by Banco General’s Foundation “Sus Buenos Vecinos”. Over 50 of the most known non-profits in Panama attended the event.

The «World Café» is a methodology that involves getting groups of people together to discuss their views on a certain topic. In this case, we shared the results of the Voluntarism Survey and the Non-Profit Management Study and asked participants their opinions about them. The process involves twenty minute rounds of conversation for the small groups seated around different tables. At the end of the twenty minutes, each member of the group moves to a different new table. They may or may not choose to leave one person as the «table host» for the next round, who welcomes the next group and briefly fills them in on what happened in the previous round. After the small groups (and/or in between rounds, as desired) individuals are invited to share insights or other results from their conversations with the rest of the large group. These results are reflected visually in a variety of ways, most often using graphic recorders in the front of the room.

Within the methodology of the World Café, the presence of an illustrator is essential because as the group talks, their main ideas are captured through drawings. Thus, the host uses both text and drawings to illustrate the main ideas of the conversations taking place.

The essence of a World Café is to generate a lot of different conversations in which everyone has the opportunity to contribute and share their ideas, concerns and comments about a particular topic.
