For the fifth consecutive year, Ford Motor Company Fund and United Way Panama joined together to organize the Ford Driving Dreams Tour. The tour offers 25 talented students from public schools a five hundred dollar scholarship to cover the cost of their tuition and materials for the next school year. The 25 students are chosen through an essay contest, due one month after the event. This year, 300 middle school students from various public schools in Panama were invited to the event, eager to participate in Ford’s scholarship program.

Ford Driving Dreams aims to empower students and allow them to understand that their dreams can be achieved. This tour is one that takes place all around the world, offering students from a wide range of ages the opportunity to accomplish all they set out for themselves. In order to transmit this idea, Ford Fund and United Way Panama invited several guest speakers from Panama to share their motivating stories.

César Barría, an award winning open water swimmer and Sports Ambassador of Panama, was the first of the guest speakers. When Barría was 21 years old, he suffered a life altering accident which resulted in the loss of his right leg. Nonetheless, Barría, who was a swimmer when he was young, decided he would swim again and that he would do anything to be successful in this endeavour.

Completely dedicated and focused on his goals, Barría went on to complete challenges such as crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, becoming the first Central American to do so. Not only that, but Barría is also ranked among the 40 best worldwide in 50 and 100 meters freestyle. Despite his accident, Barría said his motto in life is “With effort and dedication all dreams are possible,” an empowering message to the young students who listened to his speech.

In between speeches, the students also presented creative performances they had prepared, all striving to embody the theme of achieving their dreams. From theatrical skits to musical compositions, all schools assembled gave impressive performances in the hopes of winning the creative competition.

The students then received a visit from esteemed Panamanian singer and songwriter Erika Ender. Erika Ender is best known for being a trailblazer for Latin American women in the music industry and recently, for co-writing the hit song Despacito. Ender explained to her audience that her path was not an easy one and described the various obstacles she overcame to be successful. Ender spoke about being robbed and left with no money or home, all alone in a foreign country, and the difficulties of being a woman in an industry dominated by men. Nonetheless, as someone who was determined to succeed, Ender fought through these obstacles with perseverance and hope, allowing her to be the woman she is today.

The Ford Driving Dreams Tour wrapped up with the annual essay contest, the entry ticket for students to receive Ford’s scholarship. This tour, organized by Ford Fund and United Way in Panama, is one that allows students to believe in their dreams and equips them with the necessary tools for those dreams to become a reality. Through motivating speeches, creative pieces, and engaging activities, the event by Ford and United Way made the 300 students realize that despite their age and circumstances, their dreams can be achieved.
